UIA STUDENT COMPETITION: Stirring Warwick

UIA Student Competition 2014 Group Project
The project brief asked for a development proposal in 3 stages for Warwick Junction in Durban.
The precinct is characterized by the activities of the train station, bus and taxi ranks and the informal trade opportunities that these transport nodes offer. The historic cemetery provides a tranquil green space in the bustle and pays homage to the different cultural
role-players of the area.

Submission
In our approach we wanted to retain the character of Warwick Junction and the informal systems, which in our opinion, functioned well. We proposed a construction system centred on an unused bridge over the railways. The initial implementation would be a waste sorting centre which extracted fat from the Bovine Head Market to produce soap and candles. On the bridge, platforms for urban agriculture and temporary dwellings would be built. Lastly a wetland system would be constructed. The intervention acts as catalyst for development in the precinct while respecting that the informal sector develops organically.
