Scapegoat, (“Goat for Azazel”)

Scapegoat, (“Goat for Azazel”)
The Scapegoat statue symbolizes the ritual of atonement in Jewish culture, notably during Yom Kippur. This tradition involves sacrificing a goat for sin offerings and sending another, the scapegoat, into the wilderness, signifying repentance and purification. In Iran, where goats also hold symbolic importance rooted in Zoroastrian tradition, the statue reflects themes of sacrifice and purity. Notably, Iranians have historically been friendly toward Jews, with Cyrus the Great even assisting in the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. This juxtaposition highlights shared themes of sacrifice and redemption while acknowledging Iran's positive historical relationship with Jewish communities.
