Universitat de València

Logo redesign for the University of Valencia. Founded in 1499, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities of Spain.
The university’s current logo, ableit showing its historic legacy, is not very modern and lacks the ability to be properly displayed digitally and on small sizes.

The redesign modernizes and simplifies the emblem. The text is set in a more legible and concise typeface. While the minimal style and the sans serif font of the motto show its moderness, the stylized coat of arms and the serif typeface highlight its historic origins.
The University of Valencia’s emblem contains three coat of arms: top, the arms of the former Kingdom of València (similar to the current arms of Valencia); left, the arms of pope Alexander Ⅵ; and right, the arms of Fernando Ⅱ of Aragon. Alexander Ⅵ signed the bill to found the university under Fernando Ⅱ’s reign.
The coat of arms have been redrawn very minimally, loosing detailed elements like the crowns or the distinct elements. Instead, the arms are reduced to their core geometric elements, making them distinct even on small sizes.
There are multiple layout and complexity variants that can be used for different applications.
Each faculty has a logo with its name set next to the university logo. While the former faculty logos were individual, detailled, and playful, the new ones are clean and modern.
