I decided to start the new year with a new project and, to motivate myself, I had to limit the time I wanted to spend on the project. I've always loved old stone buildings, so I was Google-Street walking in the Vieux-Montréal and found this building, the old Customs House. I used to walk in this part of town when I worked there, so I was sure to find a building I would want to recreate.
J'ai décidé de commencer la nouvelle année avec un nouveau projet et, pour me motiver un peu, je devais limiter le temps que je me donnais pour ce projet. J'ai toujours adoré les vieux bâtiments en pierre, alors en parcourant les rues du Vieux-Montréal avec Google Street View, j'ai déniché ce bâtiment, l'ancienne Maison des Douanes. J'avais l'habitude de marcher dans cette partie de la ville quand j'y travaillais, alors j'étais sûre de trouver un bâtiment que je voudrais reproduire.

One week challenge
Défi d'une semaine
I started this project on Monday January 20th and wanted to spend 5 days on it, but I was sick Thursday and on the weekend I tend not to touch my computer so much, so my last day to work on it was Monday January 27th.
All that time was to be spent on modeling the building, I might texture it later on, but for now, that'll do.

J'ai commencé ce projet lundi le 20 janvier et voulais passer 5 jours dessus, mais j'était malade jeudi et durant les fins de semaine je ne touche pas vraiment à mon ordinateur, alors mon dernier jour de travail était lundi le 27 janvier. Tout ce temps devait être passé sur la modélisation du bâtiment, je le texturerai sûrement plus tard, mais pour l'instant, on va se contenter de ça.

I started by the front of the building, making the windows on the top floor, then going down, and finished by the entrance. I do love making the pattern of the stones on the ground floor, love love love. I also love making the entrance roof, because it was so easy after the one I did for my school demoreel.
J'ai commencé par la façade du bâtiment, faisant d'abord les fenêtres de l'étage, puis descendant, et terminant par l'entrée. J'ai adoré faire le motif des pierres du rez-de-chaussée, adore adore adore. J'ai aussi adoré faire le toît surplombant l'entrée, il a été si facile après celui de mon demoreel d'école.

I spent a lot of time on the entrance to the building, and decided to do the stairs differently than the real stairs, because the real ones lead to the Place, and I didn't want to do that part.
J'ai passé beaucoup de temps sur l'entrée du bâtiment, et j'ai décidé de faire les escaliers différemment des vrais escaliers, car les vrais mènent à la Place, et je ne voulais pas la faire.

I then continued by making the sides of the building. They are very much alike, the only difference being the basement windows.
J'ai ensuite continué en faisant les côtés du bâtiment. Ils se ressemblent beaucoup, la seule différence étant les fenêtres du sous-sol.

The back of the building was done next. I reused a few things I had already made, but I also did a lot of new things : the columns and the block they support, the entrance with its little roof and the stairs with their ramps. It was quite hard to get any references of the back, Google Streetview behind obstructed by a delivery truck on this side.
L'arrière du bâtiment a été fait ensuite. J'ai réutilisé quelques objets que j'avais fait précédemment, mais j'ai fait de nombreux nouveaux objets : les colonnes et le bloc qu'elles supportent, l'entrée avec son petit toît et les escaliers avec leurs rampes. Il a été très difficile de trouver des références de l'arrière, Google Streetview étant obstrué par un camion de livraison.
The roof proved to be quite a challenge, and require a whole day to do. I'm not entirely satisfied with it, but it's fairly truthful to the real one.
Le toît s'est montré assez complexe, et a requis une journée entière. Je n'en suis pas complètement satisfaite, mais il est assez fidèle au vrai toît.

In the end, I spent 8 days on the modeling of this building. My one week challenge is, in my opinion, a success, even if it was one day more than I had originally planned. I could have ended on the 7th day, but the roof was a mess and it was important for me to have the same level of details on everything.
Finalement, j'ai passé 8 jours à modéliser ce bâtiment. Mon défi d'une semaine est, selon mon opinion, un succès, même si j'ai dépassé d'une journée mon plan original. J'aurais pu terminer durant la septième journée, mais le toît était une catastrophe et c'était important pour moi d'avoir le même degré de détails partout.
