A Rare Glimpse into Teacher Training in Saudi Arabia

Early Childhood Center
A teacher-training facility in Al-Khobar
The Early Childhood Center is divided into four divisions. They include: 1. Teacher Education and Training Division 2. The Model Lab (the kindergartens) 3. Consultancy & Educational Services 4. Producing and Publishing Educational Materials The training division offers two programs -- one for high school students and one for university graduates. High school graduates attend class for three years.

During the first two years, they learn early childhood theories, particularly the work of Vygotsky and Piaget. By the third year, they begin to work in the center's kindergarten classes under the supervision of of two teachers. First, they observe and write reports about the classrooms and then they participate as helpers. The program for university graduates lasts one year and includes theory and one month of intensive training in the classrooms.

The Model Lab has 10 preschool, or kindergarten, classes and applies the most up-to-date theories and teaching and learning practices. The center's Consultancy & Educational Services Division works with schools rather than the early childhood departments of universities, to train teachers. It provides training workshops, lectures, seminars to other schools in the Kingdom and the Arab world, including long-term training packages. Trainees receive authorized certificates of attendance. The last division -- The Production of Educational Materials and Publishing Division --- publishes professional development materials, curriculum and children's stories.
