Speech to Text (Book Design)

This project was undertaken during an exchange semester at École Supérieure d'Art et de Design de Reims, France as part of the course 'Graphisme: Edition' by Brice Domingues. The aim was to convert a lecture and collection of notes by David Bennewith into a publication. The book is titled 'Speech to Text' to reflect this.

David Bennewith gave a lecture and presentation titled 'A Patient Waiter is No Loser' on dots and their reception, at Saint Petersburg, Russia in 2010. This was based on his notes published in The National Grid #7 under the same title. This lecture discussed the role of dots in communication, from the Egyptian civilization, to Braille, to morse code, to pixels.

The typeface used is Acumin variable, modified to have similar ratios to the typeface Circular.
The book uses black and white with colour photographs to evoke the sense of a presentation projected
in a dark room.

There were various layers of information that had to be conveyed, for example: Images from the presentation only, images from the notes, captions, timestamps, footnotes and more. Creating a proper hierarchy through typography and layout was a challenging, but enjoyable task.

This is the final layout:
The cover page and back cover is a remake of the first and second slide of David' presentation, made with a pixel letterset I had created.
The book starts off and ends with screenshots of the beginning and end of the lecture video.
