NKUPD Social Media Internship Spring 2020

Northern Kentucky University Police Department Social Media Internship
I had the amazing opportunity to intern for our Northern Kentucky University Police Department this Spring of 2020. I was in charge of social media and was tasked with increasing interaction and connection with students at the university as well students (and their parents) possibly attending in the future. What I loved about the internship is that I could go about this however I wanted and was given complete creative freedom. I have experience in photo, video, and graphic design however had never put all those together to connect with an audience on social media.  I really enjoyed gaining experience in that field, I learned so much about something I use everyday and feel like it was valuable moving forward in my career.

Sadly, my internship with NKUPD was cut short due to the COVID-19 virus. In that time I was able to increase follower counts and engagement across the board and create one of the best police social medias in the region.

______________

From the beginning I wanted to only post high quality images on our social media to create good visual content on peoples' timelines and a feeling of professionalism. Below are some I shot on my Sony A6300 during events or a casual day.

I also used graphics I made in Photoshop to create good visual content that'll get more engagement from students and the community. My favorite project I did was on Valentine's Day when I made pickup lines out of the officers last names and made cards out of them. Below are also student testimonials, stickers given to students based off NKU logos and mascot, pictures with the departments slogan on top, tips  before students went on Spring Break, and a collage including every officer to commemorate the end of the school year.

Students probably saw the department's officers around campus all the time but probably never had an interaction with them or even knew their names. So what I did was each week posted an interview with an officer and just asked a few basic questions. This helped students get to know their police department better and helped parents see the people that protect their kids they send to campus.

I used a two camera set up in our conference room that had a window to let in natural light on the officer's faces. The two camera set up allowed me to condense interviews or cut out mistakes without the viewer ever noticing.

Thank you for watching!
