One could expect that after spending so many weeks travelling through mountains, finally reaching the destination would be more joyous.
Instead, the monastery looked cold and unwelcoming - a somewhat underwhelming end of the journey. However, it also looked safe, and the tired travellers knew from stories that they will be given a place to sleep and food.
There would be a time for celebration later, as once the mass would start, the ringing of the bell would be carried by echo across the surrounding mountains. It would mourn all those that died on their way, and symbolise the thanks for the lives of those that survived.
