Sent - An Eclectic Furniture

Sent - A furniture designed with hospitality, comfort, and sustainability in mind

Sent was designed and created to be a furniture in an Asian home that can accommodate to both the Easterners and the Westerners with its convertibility from a bench to a high stool depending on how the furniture is orientated. It is able to adapt to differing sitting postures derived from cultural behaviors. Also, it being a bench enables it to be multi-purpose in an Asian home where it can exist as a storage space and table on top of being a sitting surface. This is in harmony with the floor culture as it encourages flexibility and maximization of space utilization.

The furniture is designed to exude comfort and warmth. The gentle curves and chamfered edges on some planes hints of this. The use of ropes also helps to break the rigidity of the structure and are spun and tied organically. On top of this, the ropes create a softer surface to be sat on. This makes the sitting experience more comfortable and ergonomic as the edges are ‘chamfered’ by the material. The bright colours of the ropes also breathe life to the furniture and makes it appear inviting.

Sent is a multi-functional furniture. In the case where there are no Western visitors, it can exist as a table, a storage or a display space depending on where it is placed and how it is orientated. Additionally, the furniture can be stacked to exist as a shelf. This makes it space-saving in a smaller Asian home. The choice of material are retired/condemned climbing ropes that have weakened and are no longer safe to be used for the extreme sport. This up-cycling of material gives it a second life and the furniture can be a memento in the climber’s house.
