Product & Social Design: DIY Bag for Refugees

"While every refugee's story is different and their anguish personal, they all share a common thread of uncommon courage – the courage not only to survive, but to persevere and rebuild their shattered lives."

It all started from a meaningful cause. THE SYRIAN REFUFEES in Lebanon and elsewhere

10 designers, five Syrians and five Lebanese, gathered during Beirut Design Week 2013, at Wyssem Nochi's studio with Samer Yamani coming from Barcelona, in a mission to create DIY products inspired from the daily life of a refugee.

We had two days to produce 10 products that will sold in donation to the Syrian Refugees in Lebanon.

حامل و محمول

This product was a reaction to our suffering from lack of public and pleasant spaces to rest, not to mention the refugees who are constantly searching for public spaces to make their own.
7amel w m7moul is a double sided bag that transforms itself into a cushion thanks to the soft straw base used by our grandparents as food trays.
Thanks to:
Warde Textile shop for providing us with leftovers,
Etile Hana Noshie for their skillful tailoring,
and the local straw sellers in the midst of Beirut city
The two sides of the bag and the straw base
All textile used to make 7amel w m7moul was residue material that was meant to be thrown away.
The making of: it took 2 hours to put it all together
DONE.... Even though this product was made from residue material, to my luck the colors and patching of the cloth gave it an eclectic, yet modern touch.
The bag was sold for 100 Dollars to a famous artist. Money when for donatin to the Syrian Refugees
