Park(ing) Day 2012

Park(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists, designers and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks.

Freight is an interdisciplinary collaborative made up of Michael Pecirno, Tamara Grusin and myself. We're visual designers, architects, environmental designers, typographers, and writers. We're mostly curious about how we can improve Chicago's urban landscape through interventions, a catalysts that allows people to rethink livable space.

For Park(ing) Day, we created a temporary park in Chicago's River North community from recycled paper tubes and plants. The tube structure created a beautiful and functional divider from car and bicycle traffic.

The temporary park was on Wells & Hubbard near the Merchandise Mart since there isn't nearby green space. We spent the entire drizzly day in our park and paid the meter for our grassy parking space. One passerby was so excited about our park that he paid the meter for us. We're grateful for the support.

A kaleidoscope was designed to be a literal exercise to help people see the city in a new way.
