“Dawn Rises:” the red envelope for the Year of the Rat

Cover Design Concept—

1. The cover design incorporates five elements of Yin and Yang with local characteristics.

2020 is the year of the Gengzi. "Geng" symbolizes white gold and “Zi" is another name of rat in Mandarin. 2020 is the year of white rat. Thus the white paper color is retained in the background color of the card, symbolizing the color of Gengzi.

In the theory of five elements, rats belong to water. As a result, at the periphery of the circle on the cover, water waves are used to symbolize the fortune and prosperity brought by water.

The most eye-catching visual element in the middle is the lines rising from the dawn which set off two mice. In addition, pineapples on the four sides of the card are not only a fruit of Pingtung, but also the fruit favored for the lunar New Year, representing a flourishing Year of Rat.

Design Variations—

2. The interior design keeps to the theme as “dawn". The highest peak of southern Taiwan, Pingtung Dawu Mountain sits on the bottom. Hundreds of lines radiating from the mountain with one dollar coin representing the sun. This light of dawn is a hope, a beautiful vision, and the true blessing to Pingtung.

3. On the upper right corner of the red lucky bag, there is a cutout design representing traces of rat bite. Instead of directly placing a rat pattern, the idea is to make the rat invisible and only see the traces left by the rat. Opening the red envelope, the tooth indents turn into the shape of clouds, echoing with other cloud patterns tooled in gold. It symbolizes seeing the dawn, which is pronounced similar to "rat" in Mandarin, after opening the cover of clouds.
