Visual Narrative: The art and design of Storytelling

This project is about a sequence that communicates the re-written story of Rumpelstiltskin. The theme of this project is plagiarism and cheating. The story contains cautions, moral, the effect of action and the element of surprise. The knowledge from various activities/events during the module reflects on this project. This paper will focus on the process and development, both practical and theoretical.

The illustration plays a big role in the storytelling part.  They engage the audience’s attention by delicate details and enhance imagination. Illustration style was inspired by A history of illuminated manuscripts (De Hamel, 1994), which depicts multiple scenes of narrative within a single frame. Multiple actions and scenes are portrayed in a single visual field without any dialogue. The sequence of events within the narrative is defined through the re-use of the main character.

adapted storyline into the three-act structure for keeping a story on track.
This ‘Rumpelstiltskin’ version happened in the medieval period.
Characters, objects, and sceneries was drawn separately for easy to adjust.
Composing all in Photoshop and print out as an actual size. Then, used tracing paper for inked.

Scan and colouring in Photoshop.
Colour scheme was explored that suitable with the theme of project.
Using limited colour that easy to control mood and tone of the project .

To summarise, this project allows the author to adapt the knowledge from the course and be able to deal with time management. Therefore, it is a great opportunity to work on this project which, would be beneficial for the following project in this nearly future.
