A morning walk through the Tiong Bahru market
3-6am, 31 Dec 2009
Tiong Bahru, a little estate in Singapore, has generated quite some buzz and attention in recent years.  The district has always been colourful.  It is the Singapore government's first public housing project, and once upon a time, it was even reputed to be an estate where the rich and famous kept their mistresses. (See "On a little street in Singapore", Oct 1 2010, magazine).

I moved into the Tiong Bahru district around October 2009.  The wet market where I have bought my first pet terrapin has recently undergone upgrading.  It is now organised, well-lit, and better ventilated.  I wondered how this might have impacted on the old-timers. So, on new year's eve, I took a walk around the Tiong Bahru market with my camera.  It was unbelievably easy to strike up a conversation, in a mix of Cantonese and Chinese, with most of the hawkers and store-owners.  Here are some of my photos.

Some of these photos were submitted to a community project where a selection was exhibited at the SubStation in Singapore, and subsequently compiled in the publication
