Maelstrom Magazine

Maelstrom magazine is a conceptual publication which explores and celebrates the diversity of the design field, showcasing various practices and experiences which exist within it.

This initial issue explores these themes within the context of typography, expressed through articles by Robert Bringhurst and Maya P. Lim.
The first spread (Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst) follows more traditional typographic styling rules—which make up the substance of the text. In accordance with these rules, the typography is evenly balanced and is structured with hierarchy. Distorted offset pull-quotes were designed to bring the typography to life, as described in the article, yet still remain true to the guidelines of traditional typographic detailing.
The subsequent article (The Poetic Experience by Maya P. Lim) is designed to be a little more expressive. The typography is structured in floating text blocks, and text is embellished with hand-drawn accents. Collaged, typographic imagery also interacts with this more energetic styling. Basic typographic guidelines are still enforced, employing the same typeface, pull-quote treatment and typographic grid as the rest of the magazine.
