SITE POTENTIAL

From the research, Dubai is a city of two contrasting elements naming city life and desert life. Due to the rapid growth of the city, the desert life has been affected drastically throughout time. The project is embedded between these two elements to facilitate the co-existence between city life and the desert life without harming one another. The site is located at the Dubai Investment Park where there is an unclear boundary between the desert life and the city life. The site is surrounded by industrial warehouses and construction sites on one side and the other side is the desert. There are farm animals alongside the desert dunes where camels and other animals have been seen and are harmed by the pollution caused by the construction happening.

THE CONCEPT

The concept is derived from the philosophical meaning of boundary and what happens when there is a boundary between contrasting elements. For something to exist it needs to have an edge or a boundary. For example, let's consider a wall of a room being the boundary, while the door indicates the edges and possibility of an exit. The idea of a boundary can be determined by looking the opposite to that which is infinite or boundless and how both fixes by a contrast. Furthermore, the world is known to be the world with bounded or finite things while the infinite and unbounded from which everything stems does not subject to experience. What distinguishes the things of the world is by being individual things that are enclosed in a particular form and hence differentiates from all others.

Therefore, the boundaries of the two elements create a zone of interaction. This zone is called a border. According to Stephen Jay Gould and his studies on the examination of ambiguous borders, a natural ecological system between two kinds of the edge he differentiates boundaries and borders. The boundary is an edge where things come to an end, while the border is an edge where different things interact. Boundaries create borders between the edge where different kinds of species interact. He also mentions that in borders organism becomes more interactive due to the meeting of different dynamic physical conditions (Sea - Gould, Stephen) .

PROJECT FUNCTIONS

The functions of the project is derived according to the site needs. These function include all the amenities needed by the construction site. These amenities include offices, storage area, health facility, common washroom, praying hall and cafeterias. Furthermore, the project targets the labor accommodation as through research Dubai's labor faces challenges when the sites are far from their accommodation making them tired due to long hours of commute. Hence, the project accommodates labor accommodation with all the required and leisure facilities to promote a better living for the workers.
