Pingtung Martial Arts Hall

The aim of the visual identity for Pingtung Martial Arts Hall was to create an arts-friendly identity that is easy to recognize and targets the huge modern art audience in Asia.

Pingtung Martial Arts Hall, a contemporary museum in Taiwan, is a historical architecture called “BUTOKUDEN“ which built for police training in 1930 Japanese colonization period. The result is a design concept that is based on the simple idea of modernizing and simplifying the characteristic roof “Karahafu” to show a type of gable with a style peculiar to Japan.

The logo comprises both the Mandarin character “Martial Arts” and an abstract illustration of the curve of typical roofs on its buildings. In addition, a flexible system of patterns has been developed that are inspired by architectural details and which can be reconfigured almost infinitely.

The design focus was to glorify the architectural appearance, to emphasize its use and to show how this recognizable holds the essence of artmaking and storytelling.

This approach allowed the brand design to be applied broadly across all other media, leading to a substantially higher number of online followers and museum visitors.
