COVID-19 / Quarantine Project
A global, novel virus that keeps us contained in our homes—maybe for months—is already reorienting our relationship to government, to the outside world, even to each other. Health care professionals are working round the clock without the required protective gear to safeguard themselves. They need more masks, gloves and protective clothes, only if they are safe will we all have a chance at safely recovering too. Most of us who are stuck at home, or better to say are luck to have to stay at home compared to health care workers, can focus on learning new things, reading, or try to support in a way they could. Designers are continuing to provide innovative solutions with 3D printed ventilators and masks, while fashion brands have shifted focus on surgical gowns and clinical gloves. This project, called “Protect”, is my take on this topic.
Protect is imaginary medical equipment brand, with main focus on producing protection clothing for health workers and especially ambulance drivers. In design process, I started from existing protection clothes used today and tried to enhance some design details and functional elements. This project is study and experiment of medical-wear functionality through complete 3D design process. My intention was to explore conceptual product that can be adapted to different situations, by following ergonomics and movements of the human body. At the same time I tested capabilities of 3D software - MarvelousDesigner, ZBrush and Keyshot9. 3D software already revolutionised product and industrial design workflow, by speeding it up and at the same time reducing unnecessary waste. Having possibly to use 3D in apparel design process, and reduce waste in that way, is already groundbreaking.
Branding
Even though I started this project under imaginary “Protect” brand, I was trying to develop the design that can be easily rebranded. Being strong believer of Siemens Healthineers design heritage, I decided to dedicate this project towards them, and implement some of Siemens Healthineers design elements and colours.
3D Creation Process
Over the past decade, I dedicated myself to study 3D software. Most of them were CAD and integral part of product design process, but I wanted to expend my 3D skills by learning some of CGI tools as well. These days there are so many different possibilities, but principle is similar across the platforms. The result is non-stop evolving process, where I’m also trying to implement some of the photography skills in final visualisation. Marvelous Designer and CLO3D are offering sustainable 3D design approach, which is the refraction of classic tailoring technique, but in digital environment. Avatars are giving the option to check how different pasterns will fold throughout instant simulation. Goal of this process is to test final visual appearance as well as different patterns before real material is wasted.
This project is created using Marvelous Designer, ZBrush and Keyshot9. All of the 3D assets and final visuals are specifically made for this project from start to finish.
