The National Library, Prague

School project at CTU, studio of Ondřej Císler and Tomáš Oth (2013)

The building of The National Library for Prague bounds a great park and detaches it from a busy street, but it also connects two separated parts of the street and helps create a street line there.
It includes two ways, first way is through the park, which continues fluently across the library. Second one is the way towards knowledge, way through the library. It begins with a glazed entrance inviting to a visit, revealing a part of the big atrium. After ascending the staircase, the atrium opens in front of a visitor, two open books standing opposite to each other, which create the centre of the library – the main study room. It broadens and then narrows and leads to the second entrance.
The facade of this library refers to information and is designed to be compatible with the placement of the bookshelves and to prevent unwanted insolation. In the direction of the park it is supplemented with loggias for the visitors to get some rest.
