Ken Kesey was a counter-cultural figure linked to the Beat Generation of the 1950s.
In 1964 Kesey formed the group known as The Merry Pranksters. The group traveled across the United States in a colourful school bus promoting the use of psychedelic drugs - their motto: ‘Never Trust a Prankster’.
This portrait is a depiction of his time with the Merry Pranksters, integrated with symbolic imagery form his most renowned novel; One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

The project was then developed into a book cover.
In 1995 Kesey enrolled at the Veterans Administration Hospital in California, to become a volunteer
experimental subject taking mind-altering drugs and reporting their effects. The alternate perspective he gained during these LSD sessions formed the background for his novel 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' .
