Final Major Project - Paper events

The Brief
With over 7 billion people living on this planet, there is a vast array of diversity and cultures. But each and every culture has their own interpretation of life, with annual events and festivities to celebrate what’s important to them. This brief is about exploring the different cultural events around the world that bring people together and having something to look forward to as well as showcasing and challenging your skills as a designer.

My response
After a bit of research and refinement, I chose 6 different events around the world to base my models on; Montreal Jazz Festival, Gion Matsuri, Day of the Dead, Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, Oktoberfest and Cannes International Film Festival. During the first half of the project, I designed and made the 6 models, cutting and assembling each piece with no more than a craft knife, some glue and my pair of hands; due to the tight schedule, I had to limit myself to no more than a week for each model, from initial sketches and mockups to producing the final model itself. In the second half of the project, I developed the models graphically into a handmade book and a series of colourful postcards combined with self written poetry about each event.

This project has really challenged me from paper crafting, photography, typography and book binding to time management and poetry writing. Simultaneously, this has also been a very fun and exciting brief of which I thouroughly enjoyed.

I created a series of 30 postcards (5 per model) with a Lustre finish on one side and the poetry on the other.
The book consisting of photography of the 6 models printed on a textured paper, hand cut and hand stitched together.
