With so many cats in New York City, many are left without a home. We were tasked to create a set of animations to pull on the heartstrings of New Yorker's and encourage them to adopt cats at Best Friends shelter.
We created three short animations from the perspective of three different cats struggling to find an owner. The message: contrary to popular belief, cats only have one life and it's up to us to give them a good one!
'Cats Only Live Once' was a project created in collaboration with Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness. We're really proud of this work so we hope you enjoy it!
Meet our Special Needs Cat, he's looking for a forever home but is often overlooked - just because he's a little different.

Our black cat is too often thought of as a symbol of bad luck. He's at Best Friends shelter waiting for his luck to change and for the perfect owner to take him home.

Our Senior Cat is usually cast aside in favour of kittens, but that doesn't mean he doesn't deserve a loving owner. He's waiting at the shelter for someone to recognise that there's life in the old cat yet.

As Best Friends Shelter is based in New York, we want to represent the diverse demographic that can be seen in the city. We spent a lot of time developing the personalities of our characters, both those at the foreground of the action and the 'extras'. We first thought about the type of characters we would create and how we could visually signify them in the moodboard stage.
We even took to the streets of Sheffield for some inspiration on mannerisms, style and movement to get thinking about how we would bring our characters to life.
Conveying emotion in a short time was key to this piece, so we made sure to create expressive, characterful faces.
From hipsters, to traffic wardens and everything in between...
Whilst visiting New York, we did loads of research (and not just stroking cats).
As our set was specific to the Best Friends shelter in NY, we spent a lot of time making sure it was just right.
Seeing the shelter in-person, collecting sound recordings and visual references was key to the authenticity of these stories and demonstrated the importance of R&D as part of a production pipeline.
