2012-2015 First Year Faculty Fellowship
Office of First Year Experience, University of Kansas
The faculty fellow works with the FYE staff and campus partners on the design of new initiatives related to Goal One of KU’s Bold Aspirations Campaign: Strengthening recruitment, teaching, and mentoring to prepare undergraduate students for lifelong learning, leadership, and success.
 
2013 Byron T. Shutz Award for Excellence in Teaching, The University of Kansas
The award recognizes distinguished teaching, scholarship and service.
 
2012 Golden Apple Award
Nominated by students. The Dallas Society of Visual Communication’s version of the “Teacher of the Year” award, the Golden Apple is presented annually to the educator whose understanding of the visual communications professions, superior curriculum, and exemplary mentoring are evident in the collective quality of the work submitted by his or her students that year at the National Student Show and Conference.

I was faculty advisor for Brenna Paxton’s project in which she received $2625.00 to explore two broad questions: How does color usage change by location or culture? How should designers choose colors based on an audience’s location and culture?

Hallmark Cards Inc. Summer Internship, 2010-2012
Over 1000 students from top private and public universities apply for the summer internship program. KU has been successful in getting a print intern hired for the summer internship program. 2011 marked the first year a student has been hired in the interactive area.

Juried by nationally recognized design professionals. Jordan Jacobson-2 projects, Jaclyn Co-2 projects, Cat Coquillette-2 projects, Christopher Klee-2 projects all received awards and their work done in my classes.
 
Christopher Klee’s branding project won a juror’s choice (highest honor in the show) award from Connie Birdsall, Lippencott, NYC. Jordan Jacobson’s branding project won a juror’s choice award (highest honor in the show) from Aaron Draplin, Draplin Design Co., Portland.
 
George Ressler, USA Student Finalist, Red Dot Design Awards, Spring 2011
George's thesis project that was designed in my VISC 520 Designing for Change senior capstone course (along side his ID thesis class) was a student finalist in this prestigious international juried design competition. His thesis created a revolutionary new system of childhood vaccinations called Hug.  Hug's vaccination system creates a stress-free, informed experience for parent and child so they enjoy the intimate lifesaving moment together. To date his project has collected two design awards, as well as a finalist in Red Dot.

The Brass Ring 25 Awards Competition, Spring 2011
The Brass Ring competition is designed to motivate and reward students for excellence in art and design and is sponsored by Oklahoma Christian University Art + Design. Juried by nationally recognized design professionals. Jovan Nedeljkovic received three awards for work done in my classes.

Annual National Student Show and Conference. Juried by nationally recognized design professionals. Caroline Curtin, Aimee Wray, Lauren Schimming and Michael Selby all won awards for work completed in my class.
 
A6 AIGA KC Design Competition, Spring 2010
Sixth Annual American Institute of Graphic Design, Kansas City Design Awards – the A6 Awards. Juried by nationally recognized design professionals. The VisCom area took home 16 of the 31 awards given out to students. 7 out of the 16 awards was work done in my class. Students awarded for work done in my classes are; Michael Selby (2 awards), Caroline Curtin, Jarred Kolar, Caitlin Harsch, Brian Rio, Jovan Nedeljkovic.
 
AIGA Scholarship, Spring 2010
Two students from each of the area schools were nominated by their professors to compete for the annual AIGA Kansas City Chapter Scholarship. Michael Selby submitted his work and was awarded the $1,000 scholarship. 4/10 projects he submitted were done in my classes.

The students underwent a rigorous interview and application process before being judged the “best of the best”. Caitlin Harsch, Matt Chase and Lindsay Tippett were awarded scholarships

A5 AIGA KC Design Competition, 2008    
Juried by nationally recognized design professionals. The VisCom area took home 16 of the 26 awards given out to students. 5 out of the 16 awards was work done in my class. Students awarded for work done in my classes are; Chi-Hiu Yim (2 awards), Luke Lisi, Tristan Teelander and Matt Chase.

Chi-Hiu Yim’s branding project for my Graphic Design 4 class was one of three juror’s choice award winners, the highest honor of the show.

Graphex Student Design Competition, 2008    
Sponsored annually by the Art Directors Club of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Juried by nationally recognized design professionals. Danielle Dragan won a $250 Judge’s Choice Award in the student division for a website she designed in my class.
 
AIGA Scholarship, 2007
Two students from each of the area schools were nominated by their professors to compete for the first annual AIGA Kansas City Chapter Scholarship. Laura Rottinghaus submitted her work and was awarded the $1,000 scholarship. 4/10 projects she submitted were done in my classes.

A4 AIGA KC Design Competition, 2007  
Juried by nationally recognized design professionals. The VisCom area took home 19 of the 27 awards given out to students. 7 out of the 19 awards was work done in my class. Students awarded for work d one in my classes are; Troy Frost (2 projects), Chi-Hiu Yim, Alison Radke, Kelly Sands, Catherine Chao and Alicia Brandt.
2007    Dallas Society of Visual Communication. 2nd Annual National Student Show and Conference Presented by the Dallas Society of Visual Communications and open to student from around the nation. Students: Laura Rottinghaus and Chi-Hiu Yim were awarded for their work done in my class.

Kansas City ADDY Awards, Spring 2007
Luanne Martin’s entry was honored at the Advertising Club of Kansas City’s ADDY awards show. Her Handmade In A Digital Age Identity was created in my Graphic Design 4 class.

2007 International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge Award in Informational/Explanatory Graphics. It is co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the journal Science. Students Ivan Aguirre and Carolina Medeiros won awards for their posters for the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets. For their awards CReSIS paid for each of them to travel to the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. to present their work at Making Science Global climate change conference.
