Through service-learning, my students—use what they learn in studio to solve real-life problems. They not only learn the practical applications of their design studies, they become actively contributing design leaders, citizens and community members through the service they perform.

Students collaborated with CReSIS to design posters that celebrated the International Polar Year (or IPY is a collaborative, international effort researching the polar regions and has happened about once every 50 years). The poster also communicated what the CReSIS mission is and how they develop new technologies and computer models to measure and predict sea level change and its effects to the ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica.
Students Ivan Aguirre and Carolina Medeiros (below) won awards in the International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge for their IPY posters. For their awards CReSIS paid for each of them to travel to the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. to present their work at "Making Science Global" climate change conference.
