Wave of Light
2006 International Velux Awards for students of Architecture

iNTRODUCTION
The goal of our work is the REDEFiNiTiON of the relationship between MAN and DAYliGHT. We believe that a building’s passive adjustment to new conditions doesn’t offer the possibility for the user to intervene in this space in an iNSTiNCTiVE way.

CONCEPT
We chose as our working canvas one unit of space in which movement regularly occurs, a
corridor. It isn’t vital to define the place of the project or its use as in each situation the needs are different. This admission alk:>Y.s us to analyze the idea of its main and essential characteristics.

LiGHT
Daylight undertakes an active and primary role in the realization of our project as the light itself and its shadow comprise its structural elements. The idea is that each quantity of light which enters the space corresponds with one human unit. The skin of the building adjusts to man in an organic way just like the pupil of the eye adjusts to every light condition. The user, through his weight. defines how much light will be pennitled to enter the space. The use of light as well as of shadow (through the user’s absence) aims at the atmospheric enhancement of the space, which takes on symbolical and mystical extensions. The importance of light results finally in a personal discovery where each person continually reveals a new and different reality of the same space. The emission of light at night will contrast with its absorption during the day enlarge the spectrum of possibilities.

MOTiON
In our project the movement of light in the space is directly interrelated with the movement of the people in the space. In our concept, light is an element for which the user is critically responsible. With its own motion the space immediately acquires theatrical dimensions. The visitor seems to be the actor in a play with a spotlight focused on him while the city is his audience. In this space a drama unfolds, for which the user is the one and only responsible.
MAN is the star that lights the scene, LIGHT AND SHADOW are the scenery, and what you just got to do is “TAKE YOUR LIGHT AND GO FOR A WALK!”.

TiME
However, what has been reported up to now can only be considered incomplete. Because the meaning of light as well as the meaning of movement cannot be considered without the dimension of time. Each personal moment is unique and is projected outwardly to the urban environment. In conclusion one vertiginous net of personal moments which diverge, converge and move parallely, is possible. Our goal is a spectrum of infinite experiences.
