This painting was produced in response to the project title 'Rock'. After lots of mind mapping, I came to the conclusion, my dad is my rock and I wanted to portray this limitless respect and loyalty to my dad through creating a detailed painting portrait. The style was inspired by Lucien Freud and his use of square brushes, obvious brush strokes and a more modern approach to shading. The holding of the baby represents the safety I feel with my dad and the expression on my dad's face is an attempt to show calm, caring and a protector. The painting was completed in my A-level exam piece and was under strict conditions of non-stop painting in silence all day for 3 days (from my memory). Although my style is usually spontaneous bursts of energy, I found being forced to focus for this long has an incredible affect on my work and to date this is technically my best piece of art work.
