Process of conceptualisation and creating an illustration voice, personality and character of Burpple
While working in Burpple since 2018, I had the honour of creating Burpple’s illustration voice and personality.
Burpple set out to be a platform where anyone could contribute their food photos and reviews of places they have dined at. This community-driven network soon became the place that food-lovers could rely on to discover great places to eat.
Our goal was to create a brand that’s warm, friendly, passionate & knowledgeable. We wanted to create a distinctive personality yet have a personal touch to it – as if Burpplers are talking to their friends when they see our works. Burpple strikes up a conversation with anyone interested in food, ever-ready to recommend, inspire and delight.

Finding the right colours into creating our unique personality
In crafting our unique voice, we created a colour mood board that fits our personality. Bold punchy use of colours to attract and also show confidence. And a set of colours that translates warmth, friendliness and passion.

Our illustrations and art mostly consist of food and are character-driven (translating the idea of Foodie friend) which is accompanied by a hand-drawn personality with a bold colour palette.

We publish an article weekly that consists of curated food theme guides for our readers and the foodie community. And with our values & personality mentioned, we create banners that are warm and friendly with the usage of a handwritten & san-serif font, and also illustrations of food.

Applying design & personality into our product
Another fun aspect of designing an illustration personality is putting together the illustrations with our products. And this is very important for our branding so that people would remember us whenever they use us. The Burpple app consists of spot illustrations that build the connection between the app and users too.

While communicating with Burpplers and our Foodie Community, we inject some fun and friendly tones with our illustrations so that it is relatable to everyone. This is translated across our app and instagram stickers (while users post food stories while using our Burpple Beyond membership) – bringing excitement, joy and possibility to their dining experiences.
