User Interfaces: LKA.Holodeck

Because the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) in Munich is capturing the crime scenes with a 3D laser scanner since 2006 and is therefore able to preserve them indefinitely for investigators and the court, I saw an ideal opportunity to use my skills in creating a useful application by creating an interactive VR application for inspecting and examining the crime scenes as my master's thesis.
As part of this work, the officers were not only able to visit and inspect 3D scanned crime scenes virtually by using the HTC Vive, they were also able to measure distances and angles, set tracks, firing channels and dummies and (un-)display them if necessary.
In future, this will support the police's investigations beyond the moment of the crime scene’s release (see, for example, Oktoberfest assassination in 1980).
With the help of our prototype, the chief of the capital crime commission was able to apply for funding from the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior to further expand our developed technology.
In addition to the user research, the UI design and the subsequent UX examination,
I supervised the project direction regarding the wishes of the LKA employees and the associated usability.
