THE 14-CARAT ROADSTER - book layout design and binding

Jenő Rejtő (a.k.a.: P. Howard, Gibson Lavery) was a Hungarian journalist, pulp fiction writer
and playwright. “It is a prevalent opinion that he lifted the genre to the level of serious art,
and his works will long outlive him” (Wikipedia).
In my design the Roadster with its expressive headlights roars over a the front and back covers,
where I tried to catch the spirit of the whole adventure. The layout serves readability, so your eyes drive through the text with the speed of the car, while the serif Garamond type anchors down the narrative. Grotesque letters bring back the spirit of the age and the chapter beginning empty pages make you feel an even faster reader.
The 14-Carat Roadster puts 2 heroes in the limelight: the car and its dilettante driver. The former features a 14 carat gold chassis, the later is a maniac, who knows no bounds and puts this beauty through hell and high water. This adventure grabs the steering with a smile and rushes through
the roaring 20s’ full throttle.
The illustration on the cover was inspired by Charles Loupot’s art deco style poster, Voisin.
