Sandwiched in the Crack…
Hong Kong, where an inch of land is worth an inch of gold, is like a birdcage. – Daily Headlines

Perhaps, we used to be part of the same body. However, due to history, politics, and geography, different pieces have been separated. Living in different cultures, we have developed different personalities. Despite all this, deep in our hearts, a feeling of a tenuous and fleeting attachment still lingers.

As a book designer, I am more adroit at using visual signs to tell a story. For this project, I chose papers of different colours and textures to make a book that allegorises the intricate relationship between the Mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The block of simple red refers to the Mainland under communism. Different hues of blue that gradually become green symbolises Taiwan wavering towards separation. As a clear contrast in terms of colour and volume, a sliver of gold represents Hong Kong, as its precious land is worth a lot of gold.

Hong Kong finds itself sandwiched between two Chinese-speaking cultures. Although small, Hong Kong boasts a well-educated and versatile workforce. The people thrive when unforeseen challenges are presented to them, and are accustomed to turning ideas into opportunities. In this crack where nobody else wants to be, I think we still have potential to shine brightly.
