James Kasim's profile

How a CPA Differs from an Accountant

A certified public accountant, James “Jim” Kasim has roughly 20 years of experience in capital markets, financial reporting, treasury management, and investor relations. He is competent in deal underwriting, corporate strategy, debt structuring, and joint venture structuring. James Kasim is a member of the California State Society of Certified Public Accountants.

While a certified public accountant (CPA) and an accountant have some similarities, they are largely different. The major difference is in the education backgrounds of the two professions. A CPA has undergone a rigorous set of exams and has been licensed to operate. An accountant, on the other hand, typically has a bachelor’s degree in accounting, but no specialized certifications.

In addition to differences in educational qualifications, accountants can’t represent clients on their behalf, or take on fiduciary roles, while CPAs can. However, an accountant can seek the necessary qualifications and become a CPA. CPAs are governed by a strict code of professional standards.
