Logo Design Case Study | Island Vibes DMV
Island Vibes DMV: Maryland, USA. A music promotion company operating in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia area (DMV). Specializing in music concerts and nightclub parties. Also specializing in the music genres of Soca, Reggae, and R&B.

The Brief

The client wanted a design that was clean, simple, and uniquely recognizable. The logo had to align with the company’s brand of catering to a sophisticated clientele.

Concept Development

In the design, I wanted to have elements that represents the DMV and Islands of the Caribbean. A couple ideas I had were: 1. The capitol dome with coconut trees behind them, but that design got too complex. 2. Combine Coconut trees with a geographical map of the DMV area. There were two problems with this idea; The several maps that I found were inconsistent, some maps included certain areas, and some excluded others. Also, the geographical map would be unrecognizable.

The second idea led me to my third idea and the idea that I settled on. A combination of a geographical map of Washington, D.C., (recognizable), and two coconut trees. I added some abstract rings that represent multiple concepts in the design. The rings represent the areas beyond the Washington, D.C. boundaries that make up the DMV area, similar to rings used on a map to show how far from the epicenter an earthquake extended. The rings also represent musical sound waves (Vibes/vibrations).

Colors

Along with Blue being associated with the islands, blue skies and ocean; the combination of light and dark shades of blue conveys sophistication. And Red is energetic, which is something you want in a music concert or party.
A logo should be able to show well in black & White. Of course, there's always exceptions to the rule.
