ECHO-LOCATION
Social evaluation permeates every corner of life and affects our choices. I have heard many so-called correct ways of growing up since childhood, as well as those full of difficulties. Various indicators are telling us what is good and what is right, but sometimes I forget what I want to experience.
Therefore, I want to make a device related to echolocation, explore the relationship between social positioning and people, and trigger participants to think about it.
I designed the device in the form of a tunnel. When people walk in, they will feel surrounded, and I want participants to experience the process of selection and feedback. So every step that people take will bring changes and feedback to the device. First of all, I extracted the graphic elements of sound waves---- lines, and deformed the shape of the sound waves to form an undulating visual effect, which represents the road you choose and uses it as a graphic of the ground. The graphic path of the ground will grow with your pace and produce different "terrain," and these terrains like sound waves are like your output, your choice, and expression, and different choices will also produce different sounds or music.
These "sound waves" spread to the tunnel wall, and the tunnel wall then responded accordingly. I incorporated the vocabulary of feedback into the lines of sound waves. As the lines flow, it is like embodying sound waves on the water, and different paths you choose will produce different feedback. I set up a moving walkway in the tunnel, symbolizing the "right" easiest and most direct choice. You can also choose to walk in the tunnel at will to find your favorite way. And different passing methods will produce different terrain, and may also receive negative feedback. Different feedback may affect the way the participants pass. I hope that in this form, the participants will realize that this path is composed by them, and the feedback is just an external output.
Based on this, I designed a dynamic poster of feedback. The feedback vocabulary moves as the path grows, showing its characteristics. In the vocabulary poster correct, I made the vocabulary like a light box and rotated in the same direction together, but one of them rotated in the opposite direction. Its distinctiveness reflects an ironic meaning. The vocabulary poster will also become one of the feedbacks after the installation experience. It will show the "social evaluation" generated in the experience, and together with the path card, become the output belonging to the participants.
