The Anthropocene- Interactive timeline

Digital Interactivity over print media
The idea behind creating this piece was that, communicating
a complex topic of science can be far more effective through
digital storytelling for a general audience than a creative
scientific writing/ a still
 infographic image or representation.

What age is this?

Scientists say that we are
now in the Anthropocene- the Age of Man.
The time period of Earth's
history is geologically divided
into various epochs, periods,
eons and so on. Each division
is based on strong geological
evidence found in rock layers
of Earth.
Currently, we are officially in the
epoch of the Holocene which
started 11,500 years ago.
Although it has not been
geologically proven when
the Anthropocene started
there is enough evidence
to show that we are in
the Anthropocene.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is Anthropocene?

The world no longer works
on natural systems and has
been altered to such an
extent that some human induced
processes are now irreversible.

The Holocene was marked
by fossils of the mammoth,
the walrus and the
saber-toothed cat, for example.
It showed a clear demarcation of
when the species went extinct along
with the end of the Ice Age.

We might have created such
a time-rock that marks the
start of the Anthropocene.
Leaving aside geological
facts, the Anthropocene might
serve as the biggest
warning when it comes
to the 6th mass
extinction or the
end of the world.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

“When humans look back… the Anthropocene will
probably represent one of the six biggest extinctions
in our planet’s history.” This would put it on a par with
the event that wiped out the dinosaurs.

   — Professor Steffen

Survey results showed that only 25% of the participants knew about
the term Anthropocene of which 75% were from the field of conservation
science. This shows that Anthropocene as a topic has not been communicated
to the masses at all even though it has its own official website, which in my
opinion can be much better.
A single image to represent the scene of a future stratigrapher. Stratigraphers
study Earth layers. There is a joke among them, about finding a layer of coke
bottle tops in the rock layers, after a few thousand years.
A printed timeline is far less effective than an interactive video. This was
made to user-test the effectiveness of how people respond to a scientific
looking print media. Audiences said that they would definitely choose the
digital storytelling video over this
