The United Nations declared 2013 the International Year of Quinoa. UniSA art students were invited to submit designs for the commemorative stamp.
I undertook research into Incan lifestyle, culture, and traditions in order to tell a story with the series of stamps I designed. I decided to work with theme of 'Mother of all Grains', which is what the Incans called quinoa due to its high nutritional value.
There was little information available on daily Incan life, but from some photos and tourist accounts I established that women and children spent the day outdoors tending to the sheep, sewing, and cooking.
The designs tell the story of a simple Incan family and a day in their life - the story has a strong maternal theme to tie in with the metaphor for quinoa as well as the underlying message of how women work hard to provide for their families.
