What: This is a “soft body” simulation in Blender. This is a simulation of a soft substance taking the shape of things that it touches. Soft bodies conform to the outlines of an object under pressure, just as clay does, and retain their shape when they are no longer touching the object.

Why: I created this to experiment with the soft-body physics in Blender. I have a long-standing interest in simulations done in Blender. After trying the cloth simulation, this was next on my list.

How: I created the loop and the monkey head to show how the soft body deforms as a result of contact with two very different objects. I chose a “glass shader” with ISO (light refraction angle) equal to that of water. Soft bodies look particularly good with transparent materials.

Challenge: One challenge of this project is that soft body physics in Blender is a lot less precise than cloth and water simulations, therefore, the general method to perform them is to fiddle with random settings until the desired result is achieved.
