Southpoint,
As part of a competition entry of a group project with two others, we prepared a design for a concert venue using an analogous model.  The analogy came from looking at the ways that the island had adapted over the years, through both being used as landfill for the unbuilt Louis Kahn Roosevelt Island Memorial as well as natural river processes of erosion and deposition.  This model incorporated the spaces as a landfill block, placed on the site and  were set as part of the brief, these were set onto the site within a clear wax, and eroded to provide us with the deposition of the spaces on the site.  This indicated how we could deal with the spaces in a three dimensional way.  The resulting form was one which lent itself to our model of the site.
