A Look at the Three Dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standard
Tara Kristoff is an experienced education administrator who served as the principal of Lincoln Elementary School in Brookfield, Illinois. A member of the Illinois Principals Association, Tara Kristoff also served as an area foundational coordinator for science. In this role, she provided guidance to teachers on the Next Generation Science Standards.

The Next Generation Science Standards consist of science content benchmarks for students in grades K-12. The standards, which were developed with the help of a broad team across 26 states, focus on three core dimensions from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Framework.

Dimension 1 focuses on practices utilized by scientists and engineers in their professional work. Meanwhile, Dimension 2 focuses on crosscutting concepts that are relevant to all domains of science. Current concepts range from cause and effect and patterns to diversity and matter. Finally, Dimension 3 focuses on core ideas of great importance to science.
