THE ENTANGLEMENT | SERENDIPITY ARTS FESTIVAL, GOA

An event showcasing dance between art and science from December 16-  23, 2016. A huge audience came to see this interdisciplinary collection of work showcasing ideas and forms that challenge and break traditional barriers which separate arts and sciences. The work emphasises and encourages hybrid, speculative, and experimental aesthetics that emerge from cross fertilisation of methods, processes, and tools.

THE PROJECT

The Human brain size has evolved rapidly during a time of dramatic climate change on the earth. Larger, more complex brains with pre-frontal and temporal cortices, enabled early humans of this time period to interact with each other and with their surroundings in new and different ways.

The Think Tank is a direct physical representation of the complex networking in the brain, depicting thoughts as rain drops, and memory as tank of water. Using advanced brain sensors (EEG) and electronics,we build the system to capture the action potentials fired in the pre-frontal cortex, which interactively simulates thunder, lightning and rain.

I did this project called THINK TANK which uses thoughts to ‘deliver’ rain's installation at the Serendipity arts festival with our Faculty at Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology Sai Krishna and others namely Bhavna Pruthi, Saili Palyekar, Shreya Desai and Sabhyata.

Can you make it rain with the power of your mind? Hundreds of people queued up in a dimly-lit gallery at last month’s Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa, to find out for themselves. One at a time, they put on a device that resembled headphones and concentrated — and the rain came down in a platform before them. “You are making it rain cats and dogs,” shouted an assistant as she fruitlessly held up an umbrella. From a trickle to a downpour, the rain corresponded to the intensity of a person’s thoughts.

THE MAKING

Along with the relay switch for the motor and neurosensors, we worked on the construction of the tank from scratch. The design was such that the water gets collected in the tank at the bottom of the structure and is used back again for the next time the rain is triggered by the thoughts! The pipes with small holes on the top made a cross section such that it rained everywhere inside the tank. The sides were covered with acrylic sheets on which a synapse is etched out. To enhance it's visibility, the edges were covered in LED light strips that refracted through the etched part. The front had an open flap for people to enter. Clouds made of used plastic bottles, cotton and some light were added in the room for the overall effect.

This installation was talked about in multiple newspaper articles and blogs.
