It was an honor to represent my school, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, to be part of the Spikes Asia Convention 2012's Live Art Installation. In teams of 2, we were given a total of 3 days to work with a brief

which was called the "bucket-list" brief. The way it worked was that every team would be selected by a

creative director and would be given 5 words and a quote which means a lot to them and we would have

to come up with a new idea for the installation.

 

Selected by DDB Worldwide's Chief Creative Officer, Amir Kaasei, the words and quotes were:
Muhammad Ali, Chess, My Family, Freedom & Passion and the quote “Be courageous, because the

new only happens when you risk something”.

 

After careful consideration and planning, we decided to fuse the themes Chess, Freedom & Passion 
together with the given quote. The approach will be to create a Black Horse in a 3D form  which frame is 
built by metal wiring on the foam board, followed by applying triangular forms on it. This will be placed 
against a 2D background which will feature the black and white checks which are seen on chessboards.

 

1) This was derived from the idea of Chess as in chess, there are play pieces such as the King, Queen, Rooks, Knights , Bishops & Pawns. We have narrowed down to one play piece which is the Knight, which are in form

of horses. The reason why we have chosen the Knight is as when we think of Horses, we think of Freedom - Running, Carefree, in open grassfield. 

2) Yet upon linking it back with the quote which talks about risk, we felt that horses depicts it very well in the sense of Horse Betting/ Racing. The reason why is because in order to be involved in the race, bets will have

to be placed and there is no guarantee that you will win however, if you dont take the risk of betting, you will never stand a single chance of winning anything. 

3) Lastly, Passion is potrayed through the triangular forms above the structure of the horse. The message of

the triangular forms actually mean that life is not always smooth sailing and there  will inevidently be ups and downs  throughout our lives but someday, with passion and perserverance, you’ll get there.
