Brief
For this brief I was asked to explore pictorial map making and network visualisation. The network chosen was entirely up to the individual and could be informed by any number of themes; such as friendships, education and interests. In crafting the pictorial map, various locational and geographical references could be used to create a user-friendly map for the end-reader.

Concept
South Africa is still recovering from the widespread xenophobic attacks that occurred during 2008 - 2009. As a Zimbabwean immigrant myself, the issue is deeply personal and affecting; a network of which I am a part of on a daily basis. Through primary research I interviewed five different immigrants (both legal and illegal) currently seeking a better life in ‘the City of Gold’. Through the creation of icons and pictorial maps I have summarised and tracked their route into the country. By articulating specific landmarks, routes and cost implications I have organised their personal journeys into a narrative network visualisation. For the end-reader, the maps become a way to understand both the immigrants themselves, as well as the difficulties (and often humorous surprises) faced along the way.
