The New Art Gallery at Walsall

The New Art Gallery
Walsall, West Midlands: M.Arch, Case Study Project
This report studies the luminous environment of particular gallery spaces of The New Art Gallery in Walsall. The galleries had been studied under daylighting and the study was more theoretical, since light reading from the site could not be used.

Investigating the gallery spaces included a qualitative analysis of studying site photographs, the authors impressions, visitors and staff survey and literature study. The quantitative analysis included computer modelling on Ecotect and Radiance, and physical model study under the artificial sky. The report goes on to obtain illuminance levels of the spaces and luminace ratios of 2D and 3D objects to analyse how the light affects the spaces. The report concluded that The New Art Gallery at Walsall, by means of using side-lighting has achieved a certain amount of success as long as the exhibits are placed at strategical points, as long as there is some sort of additional artificial lighting and it rethinks window reveal designs.

The Study

The study was conducted with the help of Autodesk Ecotect and Radiance to evaluate illuminance, daylight factors and luminance ratios to judge how well the gallery spaces work when it comes to display 2D artwork and 3D installations.
