This was my first ever try to create something that is my own in Illustrator. I took a class on Skillshare by Aaron Draplin. The task was to create your own family crest. Since I'm not close to my family, I decided to create a personal crest. The research for this was quite interesting since I found out that the Fleur de Lys, which was mostly used as a symbol for knights in the middleages, turns out to be a Lily which was inspired by a Lily that has my name: Germanica Iris. At that point is was cristal clear which basic shape I wanted to use for my design.
I wanted to give this very old symbol a modern touch which is why I didn't use any outlines. The symbols where easy to find. I just thought about the things I enjoy the most. I'm from Cologne, so the Cologne Cathedral had to be in it. The other symbols are pretty easy to understand I think. I read, I write and I rock.
Other than the shape and the symbols, the type was hard to find. Since I am an absolute beginner when it comes to graphic design and just learned the minimal basics of typography I couldn't decide which type to use. To be honest I just listened to my guts and there is absolutly no explanation why I used this typeface.
The colors came naturaly. I'm blond and I have bright blue eyes. Also I really like this color combination.
