HAW PAR VILLA

This piece was made for '52 Tales' gallery exhibition by the Noise Singapore and Band Of Doodlers. It was organised in lieu of National Day to celebrate Singapore’s 52 years of nation building through stories based on local tales and urban myths re-interpreted by young artists.

Artist statement:

An eclectic theme park, Haw Par Villa is a journey into Chinese mythology. At its essence is a very strong story of filial and family piety. Replete with folklore-inspired sculptures and dioramas, it conveys Chinese values through syncretic elements of Buddhism, Taoism, Chinese history, and myths. However, stories have it that the place lives by night with rumours of the statues being dead humans in wax and guards leaving offerings seeking protection. Incoherent, colourful, grotesque and quirky, Haw Par Villa remains one of Singapore’s most unusual attractions and a place interesting to rediscover.
