Open Book: An Experimental Workshop

"Open Book" is an Eastern Michigan University hosted workshop that takes place in northern michigan. It allows students to spend 10 days creating a "book" that challenges the everyday vision of what a book entails. Some students used leaves in a pond to create imagery and then placed the leaves back in to the water, photographing their new identity within their original environment. With this workshop's identity, the focus was placed on the natural aspect of the workshop & how the impact of the environment in which these books were being created would naturally influence the design. The type is hand-drawn by placing a large piece of bark beneath a sheet of vellum paper & discovering natural curves & flows that made the title "Open Book". The animals drawn are all found within the woods of where the workshop takes place.
Along with the poster & website, which has animated arrows that fly across the screen after selecting different areas of the site, a postcard & application for the workshop were developed.
