O V E R V I E W
In the summer of 2018 I had the privilege of working with multiple teams as the lead designer on assembling Houston’s bid to host the 2020 Democratic National Convention. This detailed and robust 700-page bid was wrapped in a laser-cut wood case, bound by a standard three-ring binder spine for ease in replacing pages with updated information as the document was evolving up until its presentation to DNC Chair Tom Perez in Chicago by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner (pictured below).
The binder contains maps, charts and a stack of letters of support from past US Presidents to Houston’s nightlife, entertainment and sports movers and shakers. The book was provided in limited printed copies to the DNC team of officials and digitally in optimized files for easy reading and search-ability on tablets.
Each section was color-coded and begins behind a full-color tabbed divider to break up the lengthy amounts of text and adds vibrant punches of color. Each tab highlighted different iconic Houston locations and relevant venues, transportation hubs and convention space.
Along with the bid book, I also produced slides, presentations, signage, graphics, stickers, cups, floor vinyls, window clings, electronic display messages for both Chicago venues at key DNC meeting events and at Houston venues and airports during the DNC’s site visits to Houston during their selection process.
All logos, elements and signage pictured here along with layout of the book were designed by myself. The wood binder shell was produced by Houston studio, Magpies and Peacocks, who also worked with local artists to craft unique fabric bags to package the bid materials.
If you want to see the book in person it is housed in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. - a pretty cool detail that I never thought I’d say about any of my graphic design work.
