SES New Faliro: Renovation on the banks of Kifissos

TheElectricity power station of Neo Faliro, is the first power station inGreece and was launched in Athens in 1903. Located in the coastal zoneKifissos River the boundary between Neo Faliro and Muscat. After thefinal closure in 1972, most of the complex was characterized as anindustrial monument, including its equipment in 1986. Just recentlycertified full discharge of the industrial complex of asbestos, againgiving the opportunity for rehabilitation and reuse. The position ofSES New Faliro contributing metropolitan transport networks, combinedwith the available vacant land located right at the junction ofhighways Piraeus, Stratigraphic makes the ideal location for acomprehensive urban planning.
Theexisting parameters such as the historicity of the building, a key rolein the history of electrification in the country, its proximity to thedegraded Kifissos River, the strategic location of the study area intothe urban fabric and finally broken the built environment surroundingthe industry complex, led us to create a Museum of Energy, in a listedindustrial shell and sparked a series of interventions in the areasurrounding the plant. The latter aimed at reconnecting the powerstation with the most modern urban fabric and the upgrading of a largeriparian area of the city which paragkonistike following trafficarrangements made by the major Olympic projects. Summarized the liftingof the limit laid down today on Metro lines converted to abovegroundrailway crossing in order to achieve relief of the industrial complexof SES in the Piraeus Avenue and the creation of a new Metro station,given the need to link the new supralocal pole in metropolitan Athens.
Furtherinterventions attempt to restore contact with the city for the waterelement concealed by an elevated highway while providing a core ofgreen in a densely populated part of town. Features surround theselarge urban gestures are to accompany both functional and semantic ideaof the Museum of Energy, creating a "Forum for Energy and ClimateChange." Thus, the widening of Parnassos suggest along the park is to"embrace" the museum Kifissos and Water Resources, and within thatembrace peritoichizetai the ancient temple of Cybele, hosting exhibitson biodiversity that personified the deity worshiped in this area inancient times. Finally, mild and limited commercial activities arehoused in new buildings with low energy requirements, coupled with thecreation of underground parking, take the "marriage" of the new parkwith the existing built environment and especially to the old factory"Sanitas" known Today as a "school" of Irene Pappas, hosting culturalevents and is already a powerful landmark in the area.
