How might we use video consultations to empower NHS surgeries to be more productive?

_____

Challenge
Can alternative technologies help solve the current pressures & demands on NHS face to face consultation waiting times?

_____

Assumption & Opportunity
Telephone consultation historically has proven to help clinicians solve and close minor & repeat medical conditions. As a health organisation would like introduce a video consultation feature to aid doctors to not only close minor & repeat case, but to also support complex health conditions such as dermatology, elderly & community care

_____

Product Goal
1. Select & build relationships with pilot NHS practices to trial the MVP feature

2. Create a seamless video consultation journey

3. Ship the feature rapidly, to enable us to build, measure & learn fast

_____

Methodology
User interviews, card sorting, 5-day design sprint & guerrilla prototype testing

_____

The MVP
Identifying the scope
Based on technical limitations & stakeholder requirements, what is the minimum viable product we can ship?

Discovery
How did we validate the scope? Through user interviews, with patients & clinicians, we also researched competitor products & card sorted potential features with existing video consultation users

_____

Rapid designs
Using the Jake Knapp sprint bible, I collaborated over a 5-day period with colleagues from various disciplines to design, build & test our MVP prototype. Towards the end of each day, we presented a days work
to colleagues who provided quick valuable feedback
Running
Day 1. Collaborating with the product manager we mapped out all the collective research

Day 2. Sketching with product designer, we both drew up two low fidelity journeys

Day 3. Discussions with the development team allowed us to decide on the most feasible journey to prototype

Day 4. Collaborating closely with the visual designer to prototype the feature

Day 5. Collaborating with the user researcher we guerrilla tested the prototype & quickly discovered the pain points of the prototype

Key takeaways
1. Collaborating closely with key stakeholders & the developers was extremely was beneficial, it allowed us to remove friction from the early stages of the project

2. Testing the product within a short space of time allowed us to identify key issues with the journey resulting in a positive iterative approach (design, prototype, test & then repeat)
