Harman | Consumer Electronics

This is to showcase my generalist work in Harman's in-house design studio. all of these examples combine a different type of 3D software skill, from lighting, rigging, shading to generation of procedural fabrics and animations. What you see here is commercial work under tight production timelines. I'm constrained to a fast-phase working environment so I have to find the sweet spot between time and acceptable results. My task here is to create agnostic marketing assets for harman's products, meaning they can be used in all type of media, from printed packaging material and digital thumbnails in e-commerce sites to small product videos. Let's start with product shots for packaging and e-commerce:

Often, the workflow consisting of nurbs to polygons, uv unwrapping and lighting and rendering it's pretty straight forward.  but, when you need to create a custom piece of kvadrat fabric, (that you will not find online), and a Industrial designer willing to see the exact same texture he has spent a lot of time working on, you'll have to use advanced rendering techniques. In this case, I used substance designer to develop the weaving pattern of the speaker, the result is an accurate seamless texture pattern that can be use digitally in multiple instances of the creative process:

dealing with leather folds will be challenging too. often, you will need to sculpt the details using specialized software. Putting special attention to this type of details is crucial. Since it will make the key difference between an average looking product render and a believable hero shot. In this case I sculpted the folds in the ear-cups of the headphones.

Most of high end electronics these days have a waterproof capability. So in order to sell it, the marketing team will need water in their assets. (submersion in water, water drops, or splashes). You might think ‘’it’s not a big deal, let’s add it in Post’’, but when it comes to believable marketing in high-end brands, you have to have water refraction, and many other complex light behaviors that only can be achieve using 3D.

Also, they will need See-Through Style. These types of visualizations are a standard inside the consumer electronics industry. It allows to show high quality internal electronics that otherwise wouldn’t be appreciated using standard shots.

On certain projects, the scope increases, and I have to do little modeling to create Interiors and place products in a specific user case (based in marketing requirement). Interiors and sound weaves are always very fun to deal with.

You may also come across with some rigging and animation. in order to pose or animate the products, you have to create basic rigs, this way, you can manipulate them just like in real life. E.g. you can open up the head band, turn around the hinge, etc. finally, you'll get a nice and basic video of the product.
