Beatport

For many years after the service initially launched, the Beatport website was built entirely in Adobe Flash. Among the many problems with this approach, we heard complaints from customers about the plugin requirement and the initial download size (and subsequent delays). Additionally creating a responsive experience was impossible and we suffered from a lack of content that could be indexed by search engines.

We decided to break the well-established mold that Beatport customers had gotten used to and rebuild the interface using standard web technologies. This was a radical departure for the company.

As part of the transition, we introduced a number of personalized features and accentuated the existing offering based on usage metrics and user behaviors.
There were several teams involved in the site redesign and we had a ton of usage metrics and customer feedback to sift through. I proposed an information architecture, some basic layouts and wireframes.
We decided to contract the visual design work to Teehan+Lax, the amazing Canadian consultancy that stopped functioning when its founders were hired to work their magic at Facebook. It was a rewarding experience to work with top-tier designers like them.

Here's what ultimately came out of the design process. Beatport.com has since been visually redesigned, but the information architecture remains largely the same.
